It is Kuhnel's first year working at the park and said the National Park Service had hired additional interpretive guides in the park this summer to handle the increased number of visitors for its 100th birthday. She said, "my tours have all been sold out". On June 29, 1906 Theodore Roosevelt designated Mesa Verde a national park, the first cultural national park in the history of the world. The park will celebrate it's 100th birthday with a weekend of events, dancing, musical entertainment and special tours of some of the cliff dwellings.
